The things in between: Kalimdor

“The things in between” is an ongoing series, highlighting the differences between zones that allign, seen from above.

The time has finally come to Kalimdor, my favorite continent, and the continent where I have spent most of my time through over…Gosh, is it soon 14 years of playing, some breaks in between?

It was difficult not to stop up and take a thousand shots of each zone, but I almost managed to stay on track and keep it in tune with the series, so here it is, the zones of Kalimdor and how they allign. πŸ™‚

We start from Moonglade…

…And arrive at Darkshore, falling in love with it all over again.

Moonglade, Winterspring and Felwood from above…

…And a must have-screenshot of The sky of Mount Hyjal.

…And Azshara, Ashenvale and Mount Hyjal.

Durotar, Azshara and Ashenvale…

…And back to the ground, not to miss out on The Forest of Ashenvale.

Overlooking Desolace on the right, Mulgore right behind me…

…Up and above, a more zoomed out look of Desolace, Mulgore and Stonetalon.

Of course, though, there is always time for a detour, and finding out how far we can swim, so let’s go!

Surely that Island will help me get a headstart…

This was one of my shortest Let’s Swim attempts, hah. Look at how noticeable the “end” of the zone is in the ocean!

So close to shore, it’s almost embarrasing. But nothing stops me like invible walls.

Oh, well.

With ressurection sickness and fatigue, there is just one place to go; home…

My favorite screenshot in this post…

…I was meant to write a long poem for this post to make it all come together perfectly; I could so easily see that happen. But time is not a luxury of mine in July, so this will have to do. Maybe later!

Wishing you all a very joyful weekend πŸ™‚

  1. Fantastic post, I love all of the screenshots with the angles to show us your idea.
Me? I’d be tempted to leap off some of those very great heights between zones, Mt. Hyjal is really high!
And, I anticipated a quick stop at that little area in Mulgore with the critters who don helmets and swords and skirmish. I mean, you were right there!!
    Thank you!

    1. Aw, well, thanks a lot, especially about the angles; I did try my best on those exactly πŸ™‚ Especially in the temple.

Oh, yes, I know. I always leap off! But I guess, as a Druid, it does not really count, knowing, that you can instant shift – no real danger πŸ™‚

Oh, yeah, indeed, that spot! I actually want to do a piece on those small hidden things in each zone – it’s on my to do list πŸ™‚

      You too!

  2. From so high above, the often abrupt differences between the zones form a patchwork. A continent like a huge irregular quilt, maybe? In vanilla, really only developers had that view, I guess, not we players. For us a new zone was often scary hehe.
Now I think most of us do not really look at the differences, as we are usually on the move. More “work”, less observation and immersion, perhaps. Very nice views by Alu the documentarian.
New transmog? Quite different from your other, I think. πŸ™‚
Darnassus… home is where the heart is. ^^

    1. Yeah, patchwork is a very good way to explain it, well worded πŸ™‚

I didn’t think of that, actually, good point. I guess Vanilla got a revamp once we were able to fly?

Thank you for noticing, it is indeed a new transmog, made for the occasion πŸ™‚ I tried to make it a little Darnassus Guard-like, but with a Druidic touch. Exactly β™₯

  3. For some reason, Kalmidor make me want to just walk around aimlessly, i love the zones and the music.

Lovely screenshots, your new transmog gave me an idea, since we know what’s going to happen, why not change tabards to Darnassus tabard? i’m going to do that in 8.0 πŸ™‚

    1. I feel the same way. There’s something about Kalimdor.

Thank you so much. Uh, careful on the spoilers there; I do know a little, but not the details of 8.0 at all; I stayed away from all spoilers so far. But yeah, exactly; the tabard was chosen because of the few hints I have seen and heard at BlizzCon πŸ™‚

      1. Thank you πŸ™‚ I can’t wait till this spoilerfree zone is lifted for me though! Not visiting Wowhead or Youtube is hard!

  4. It’s nice how I’m not the only one tempted to take a million shots. πŸ™‚

I always did love that mountain pass between Felwood, moonglade and winterspring. Those old passes were so cool.

That Zul’Farak/Ungoro transition is cool. I always think of Oxhorn’s machinima “Inventing Swearwords” when I see that ridge that seperates Tanaris and Un’goro. One of the episodes opens with the silhouttes of the characters walking/singing along it.

Ahhh, invisible walls are the worst. That reminds me: during one of my Antorus runs a while back, our group was getting ready to pull Imonar, the bounty hunter boss (not sure if you’ve been in Antorus). We were afk for a bit, and I was fooling around. I backed up to the cliff right behind the teleporter and said something in discord like, “I wonder if there’s an invisible wall here.” And then the tank suddenly came vaulting over my shoulder, off the cliff and to their death. πŸ˜€ They misheard me and thought I said there was a wall there. We were all laughing pretty hard for a while. πŸ™‚ One of my more memorable Antorus moments.

    1. You are definetely not the only one, no πŸ™‚

“Inventing Swearwords”? I’ve never seen it. Can you provide me with a direct link to it, please? I am so close to the patch, and spoilers are everywhere right now! Thank you for pleasing the goofy Orca :p

Lol, those laughs you can share with your team over such incidents are the best! Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

I still have a screenshot from the Lich King, where it goes something like this:

Alunaria says: Can you fall down here?

      [Senstara has died]

      Senstara says: Yep.

Lol, it still makes me chuckle to this day πŸ™‚

    1. Hey J! Thank you so much, both for paying me a visit and for adding your thoughts πŸ™‚

Thanks! I tried to come up with a transmog that would do precisely, what you describe; fit my Night elf and faction, and be very Darnassus-NPC like, while still staying true to the Druid she is. I’m glad my intentions shines through πŸ™‚

I’m not home right now, but I’ll be sure to send over the full list as soon as I can. Hopefully tomorrow πŸ™‚

    2. I’m so sorry for the delay. Such busy times. Here is the list πŸ™‚

      Winged Helm
      Springrain Spaulders
      Hidden Cloak
      Ferocious Combatant’s Dragonhide Tunic
Sharkskin Tunic (Not sure it’s shown at all through the chestpiece though)
      Darnassus Tabard
Rivermane Wraps (Not sure they are shown through the gloves)
      Gloves of the Issued Challenge
      Cord of Lost Hope
      Ferocious Combatant’s Dragonhide Legguards
      Darkspeaker’s Treads

      Hope it helps πŸ™‚
