An Ocean of Orcas

What’s with all the dust on this site lately!

I’m sorry about that…Busy times. Thank you for staying tuned πŸ™‚

Right so, the Blog Challenge Topic this time around is to come up with my own Achievement. (I’m not late)

If you could add an achievement to World of Warcraft, what would it be and how would someone achieve it?

I would love more achievements that are helping us and encouraging us to actually slow down in the game. This is an example of that.

My achievement is called…

(Gosh, I know, something with Orcas, what a surprise!)

To be able to obtain it, one must track down all the Orcas in World of Warcraft. And swim alongside of them for a minimum of five minutes.

This would involve movement of your character (so you cannot go afk and just hang about while NetflixinΒ΄or whatever!), in the depths of the ocean – an environment that Blizzard spends more and more time on decorating, yet so few even so much as dip their toes in it these days.

It’s a shame and a waste, and there are so many wonders and untold stories waiting to be discovered there.

Instead of rushing through it all, it would help us notice all the details instead.

For example, did you know, that there are Orcas in no less than five locations in World of Warcraft? πŸ™‚

This kind of achievement could easily involve other creatures or objects in game, as well. Hop alongside every bunny, waddle alongside every pinguin. You get the idea πŸ™‚

That’s my take on it!

It has been great fun to read your idea for a new achievement too, and I hope you’re all enjoying Easter together with your loved ones πŸ™‚

  1. For some reason, your post makes me think about Vashj’ir. Back then in Cataclysm, I started in Vashj’ir and thought “Diving under water, a whole map, slowly, seriously Blizzard?” but it took no more time than a few quests and they totally got me hooked. It was actually a great experience. I loved that map so much, even without the sea horse that I got at some point. Before you got it, it might be that questing was a bit slower, but the underwater world was so fantastic, and to me this made me appreciate the actual content again. It was like slowing down, taking an eye on that world. Is the last screenshot from Vashj’ir?

About your achievement, me and a friend we would totally do it! Apart from lots of PvP, we’ve always been achievement hunters. It’s not so much about the achievements, but the things you experience before or while you achieve the thing. You’re right, slowing down makes you appreciate the content again. And you get a reason to discover new things. I think we had the most funny moment, when we roamed around the world to do achievements. πŸ™‚ Also you are right, while there are already many achievements that make you go out into the world, there are still many places that are barely visited anymore.

    1. Thank you for such an in depth comment, Dennis πŸ™‚ Nice to hear a little about your Wow history! I felt the same way about Vashj’ir, As far as I remember, you even walked super fast when on the very bottom of the ocean there.

I liked the sea horse, for sure, but what I would love to see is that mount speed would be more up to the individual. Right now, it’s maxed and fast as you level, which is probably what most want, but I’d love it, if I could make it run and swim slower. Sort of like a scenic route πŸ™‚

If you are such achievement hunters, I consider it a compliment then! That you’d do this one πŸ™‚ I agree, achievements are just a fun little nudge for me to do things differently.

It would be really cool with some that takes us to a lot of the older content. A part of me worries that the whole World Quest system would eventually take over the entire world of Azeroth, and I hope that will never be the case. I much rather have that nudge, and nothing else. Less crowds makes for more immersion on my behalf πŸ™‚

      Thanks again!

    1. πŸ™‚ Thank you so, I am glad to hear I am not alone in wanting to slow down these days.

Hah, really? You are very sweet to comment on that πŸ™‚ It did take me a while to get that peculiar facial expression on Alunaria. Now I cannot even remember how I did it, but it sure was fitting for this thread πŸ™‚

  2. I’m all for slowing down and enjoying the content as much as I can. I like spending time in areas and absorbing as much of it as I can and get totally immersed (like most RP people) in what I am doing. I’m a true altoholic and have way too many characters, however, I enjoy every single minute of the game that I can. Love the Orcas too. πŸ˜€

      1. I’m not real social in RL these days because I don’t get out much, however, WoW gives me the opportunity to interact with people all over the world. I do RP in Silvermoon once in a while and the rest of the time I suppose I could consider Dalaran in the Broken Isles another place that I frequently run into a “walk-up” RP occasionally.

  3. When I think of a new achievement, I think of somehow incorporating screenshots into it. For example: take 30 screenshots in Stormheim, or 30 screenshots in Karazhan, etc. Maybe more things like the S.E.L.F.I.E. achievement. That’s how I’ve been appreciating the environments, especially when I make a blog post using them.

    1. Oh yes, that would be great! I miss that old section of “Screenshot of the Day” that Blizzard used to have on their website. I don’t know why that got lost. It was nice to see other peoples screenies in that way πŸ™‚ That could easily be tied to the achievement you mention!

  4. You are the orcas’ best friend πŸ˜€
Screenshot of the Day, that was a very nice feature .
As for slowing down, it would be nice to have several mount speeds to chose from, including different walking/running styles (at least for four-legged mammals). Or just introduce an Icelandic horse as in-game mount.
Re: achievements. For me a few for afking and offlining would be the bee’s knees! πŸ˜‰

    1. I wholeheartedly agree! I would adore being able to walk slower on a mount. Like on the ram during Brewfest. Only, without the whip!

Hah, right. Maybe an achievement on who can stay in game the longest without doing anything at all πŸ˜›

  5. Orcas! πŸ˜€ and more Orcas! and even more Orcas! ^^
I like them, they’re so sweet and adorable ^^ I would definitely do that achievement, it seems lots of fun!

I’m one of those few and go around swimming. I LOVE to go fishing and it’s kind of irresistible to go swim a bit. I’m quite happy that Blizzard is working more on those details underwater πŸ˜€

    1. I obviously agree πŸ˜‰

Being an Orca has increased the joy from swimming around, so very much. Yeah, the oceans of Legion has been incredibly beautiful πŸ™‚
